Cheap Car Insurance - Is it Worth It?

by Bill Gates, 2009-12-09

Many people shopping for auto insurance are just looking to find cheap car insurance so that they can say that they’re covered. While insurance can be expensive, it certainly isn’t something that you should skimp on because not having it can be far more costly in the end. Sure, your state might only require certain amounts of coverage for you to get by, but that doesn’t mean that this coverage will protect you when you need it most. On average, the state minimum requirements for insurance are around $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage. Of course every state is different, and your state might require more or less.

Not surprisingly, some states don’t even have a law regarding car insurance. Therefore, people will either forego getting insurance or they will get cheap car insurance so that they can have the peace of mind that they have something in place. Unfortunately, state minimum insurance requirements are usually barely enough coverage to cover anything substantial, leaving consumers to pick up the tab. A good rule of thumb with car insurance is to figure out how much you need to protect you in any situation so that you don’t wind up losing out in the end, or facing legal repercussions because you were not adequately insured.

When you’re involved in an accident and have over $50,000 worth of injuries or damage, cheap car insurance isn’t really worth it. It doesn’t cover everything and in most cases people are just wasting their money paying for coverage that doesn’t actually help out. If you think about it, you might realize that instead of wasting $30 a month on cheap car insurance, you can get double the coverage or more and only spend $50 or $60 a month instead. That way, you’ll be much better protected and able to trust that you’re making a wise investment.

Paying for cheap car insurance that doesn’t actually help you out is like buying clothes that don’t fit. Sure, you might have that cute sweater that you will need when it gets cold, but you can’t wear it because it’s two sizes too small. Don’t skimp on auto insurance protection, because when you need it most you will be glad that you have it.
